As I flipped through the TV guide (not the actual paperback one, the one on my TV) I was shocked to see what passes as “real life.” The Real World, Some people on the Jersey Shore, Kate someone with eight kids…this is “real life?!” Not mine and probably not yours. In Choice: Then and Now. Filmmaker Dorothy Fadiman uses motivation in her own life to Direct and Produce a series of documentaries about the struggles of life before abortion was legal, the fight to keep abortion safe, and the state of choice today. These are REAL people, dealing with very real issues.
On May 24th and 27th PBS will air the documentaries in Denver, and I personally want to watch every last minute. Its been more than 30 years since Roe v. Wade was made the law of the land, and this is an opportunity to see what life was like before women had access to reproductive freedom.
Most people born after 1973 have little insight as to the struggles and dangers women faced when they were left with unintended pregnancies. I want to see what the movement was like before 1973, I want to see the dangers of limited access, I want to hear the thoughts of people involved with the choice movement, and I want to learn what is being done today to help women gain access to more reproductive choices. Most of all, I want to see “real life” issues that remind me why I will always be Pro-Choice.
